Can anyone explain the copay functionality in OpenEMR ?

My recent experience with the copay box is that the amount that is entered in the field shows on the payment collection form, in the patient balance as a credit, in the insurance balance as a debt. It is applied to each encounter based on the effective date of the insurance policy.

Earlier we did not have this Copay field in the demographics page.
Any benefits for the physicians by adding it here ?
It helps the front office staff by having a quick way to know what to charge the patient when they come in without having to look up the information in eligibility. A patient’s insurance eligibility might not be run every visit.
I’ve wondered how the insurance eligibility works, but I’ve never found any information pertaining to it. Can you point me in the direction of resources where I can read more about performing that function with openemr?
hi @jggoodfe are you referring to real time eligibility (hipaa 5010 x12 270/271) transactions through a clearinghouse ?
