Voice Recognition

Has anyone used any Voice Recognition software with OpenEMR - for Notes, Dictation, etc? I’ve used Dragon before and would think it would be fine but would like ‘proof’ as it were that it does work. Anyone else tried this on Macs? - Dr. Bowen did say that OpenEMR is Voice recognition ready (MS Windows Operating Systems) and I was just hoping for some user input on this.

Thanks much,
Michelle

Michelle;

Lynne Odell-Holzer has used Dragon, which should work as well, since it really is like another "keyboard".  But she uses a Thinkpad X61 Tablet which has XP Tablet, which includes the function.

As with all the voice recognition products, the quality and uniformity of your speaking, and background noises, will compromise the accuracy of the conversion.  But if you can find a quiet spot and talk consistently, it can be powerfully capable.  Hope that helps.

Please let us know your version, platform used, and success.  Thanks.

Thanks Joe,
After thinking about it, I’m sure that any voice recognition software will work (as long as it’s properly trained). I appreciate your reply.

Sraj;

I am not specifically familiar with the Dragon medical, but the original Dragon simply pastes text as you speak after you put your cursor where you want the text to go.  Same for all voice recognition I am aware of.  So I guess steps would be:

Turn on the voice recognition software and verify on their test line that your voice reslts in text output.   Then open your app, in this case OpenEMR, and place your cursor at the desired field with the mouse.  If properly setup, you can step (tab) between fields with a "Tab" instruction usually.  And you should be able to save "Save" to trigger a save in OpenEMR.  But verify that last, and keep a mouse handy - better to use it for hard saves than take a chance.

Let us know how you make out.  Thanks.
