Update from 5.0.0 to 7.0.2 (3)

Hey guys,

  1. I need help with something. I want to update the Openemr version from 5.0.0 to 7.0.2 (3), I found a guide to update the XAMPP and the OPENEMR both at the same time and another one to update each one by separate. Which one of the options is better to folow? Should I update them at the same time or one by one?

  2. I have another doubt should I update the software version right from the 5.0.0 version to the 7.0.2 or should I update the software version by version until make it to the 7.0.2.

Before doing this update I have a client database of over 1.000 clients and in this database there is also documents included. I can do the same for the XAMPP

Or is it possible that I save the client database from the 5.0.0 version and add it into the 7.0.2(3) clean version of the software? And if it is possible can you please guide me how to do it.

Thank you!

You can upgrade from V5.x to V7.0.x, read the version upgrade documentation. Be aware that you’ll have to reset your admin password at the database level after doing so, and then reset all your user passwords as well, due to changes in how user credentials are encrypted between V5 & V7.
Note that you will have to upgrade your XAMPP first, since you’ll need newer versions of the stack components to support OpenEMR V7. 1K+ patients should be no problem on modern hardware, it’s the ones with 100K+ that get messy.
Remember to make backups of EVERYTHING in case the upgrade doesn’t work. Ideally, test your upgrade on another system before running the updates on your production environment, this will allow you to find any issues and fix them to avoid unexpected problems when you make changes to your live system. If you don’t have the ability to test in a separate, non-production environment, then you need to be extremely careful and be very prepared.
