OpenEMR Patient self-service Kiosk

I have used the app and want to contribute back to community.  It would be really a cool to have self-service Kiosk module to OpenEMR.  I was thinking of creating a new ACL group with limited access down to specific table in DB as relates to current patient records.  Kiosk menu or option to include:
1) NEW PATINET --> [yes/no]–> If yes have them fillout patient info and highlight required filed.  If yes & and patient name exists report back profile exist.  If no then allow patient to access complaint form or reason for their visit.
2) REASON FOR THEIR VISIT TODAY?  -->Start a complaint form. (or access to first part of SOAP form).
3) ELECTRONIC ACCEPTANCE OF HIPPA NOTICE? --> Have user acknowledge and walk them through HIPPA section.
4) SCAN DOCS -->  (In future scan the patients DL & Insurance card) Nice to have feature.
5) BILLING --> Show if there is outstanding balance on account.

I am initially focused on just patient enrollment to make EMR completely paper-less.  Looking for any advice where I can start and not reinvent what is already there.   Use OpenKiosk  to lock the box down at the end.  Any guidance is greatly appreciated.

I’d considered this idea too, but hadn’t gotten around to doing anything about it. Just by chance, I stumbled across this today:

I tried out OpenKiosk for the front desk terminal.  I didn’t know how to make my own version to go to another address other than www.openkiosk.com, or whatever their url is.  My router didn’t have a setting for redirecting their url to the address of my server.  I finally gave up and went with the DSL distribution (http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/).  It makes it easy to make a bootable usb drive and save settings.

A patient portal is tricky to keep your system safe from hacker/patients.  It has been discussed on this forum.  It’s worth doing anyway so we have a starting point to test and improve upon.

I recently heard a lecture where the lecturer described a setup where they have multiple tablet PCs in the waiting room for patients to fill in forms.

I looked at nomoreclipboard.com and I am bit skeptical on idea that patients would start hosting their records online.  When it becomes common practice and acceptable by patients that demand to have that future should be on hold.

Kiosk or EMR or any other app for that matter is risky in open network environment or not safe from hacks.  But EMR locked in private LAN environment with VPN would be safe.
Want to see if Rodd or Mike or any other developers have idea ideas based on their knowledge of application beck-end.

I use electronic pads from www.phreesia.com they are a free service in exchange for offering patients medical information in the pad itself at the end of completing the registration questions.

currently we print the pt info and scan it into the system, however the information can be exported to  pdf or to ccr (medical info standard)

It would be convenient if we could import the pt info into openemr, not just the pdf, but to populate the patient_data and history tables directly from the ccr file

Dr. G.  I will look into CCR files.  It would be nice to directly have integration into OpenEMR.  Let’s see if CCR files can be parsed into to extract PT record info.

Chirag Patel:

thanks for looking into this.

I am very busy trying to set up other urgent things my office needs from the openemr. I am not a programmer and so it takes great time and effort. However I did want to look into it eventually. Let me know how I can help.
I can generate the ccr files easily at my office. I can send you one if you need one.

Dr. G: can you email me the sample CCR and corresponding PDF files to cgpl2002@yahoo.com.  Thank You
