I know this is probably a dumb question since this product is open source, however i would like to know how easy it would be to modify the application for veterinary use.
For example in veterinary we use the Client and patient as two different parts. The patient being the animal (aka medical portion) the client being financially responsible.
We are very similiar to a pediatrics hospital so i just wanted to know if there are any limitations on what fields can be changed, modifed, removed, renamed ect… and how difficult it would be
One thing missing from OpenEMR is the concept of a guarantor, which is a client separate from the patient. There is an “insured party” in the case of insurance but that’s not quite the same thing. Guarantor really needs to be implemented and I’m surprised that doesn’t get more complaints.
At least here in Greece, most pediatricians use that book of prescriptions instead of any EHR system (as unbelievable as it seems). Now, even for those who use an EHR system (including OpenEMR or our own OpenEMR-based suite), the guarantor has always been assumed to be the guardian or the parents of the child.
And, quite frankly, OpenEMR has other, far more important issues than this one. Let’s not miss the forest by looking at the tree (or, in this case, a single leaf on the tree).
