ONC Criteria (e)(1) Requirement January 2026

Hello,

There’s a new ONC criterion (e)(1) coming into effect January 2026, specifically related to the patient portal. Researching online suggests that if OpenEMR isn’t updated to meet this criterion, v7_0_0 could lose its ONC certification.

Are there any plans to bring OpenEMR up to date with the latest ONC requirements and update the certification?

Thanks

Hi, let me direct your attention to a similar post. Is OpenEMR going to renew ONC certification?

OpenEMR is currently not certified to (e)(1) criteria and its not part of the base EHR definition so there’s not a risk of OpenEMR losing its certification. We’ve talked about certifying to it, but we’ll need to do some accessibility updates in order to meet the (e)(1) criteria.

You can read more about the Base EHR definition here.

We are doing all of the USCDI updates needed for (b)(1) and (g)(10) and corresponding criteria by November. We will be up to date with USCDI V4 by November and all the criteria we are currently certified to. We also will likely have a few new (c)(1) - (c)(3) clinical quality measures we’ve certified to.

If you have funding to contribute towards (e)(1) we’d love to have a conversation.
