Is there any mobile app available that can be used for taking/checking appointments? If it is not there, can our developers think of designing one as it seems that it would be the most useful app, especially for Asian region where front office staff might not be much computer-literate.
With ever increasing screen resolutions of mobile devices, the difference in user experience with mobile web browsers and laptops/desktops is becoming less and less. As we saw with the attempted Android OpenEMR version previously, there’s a lot of “buzz factor” surrounding a mobile specific app, but the truth is that the effort to develop mobile specific version does not provide enough real benefit. The most productive use of limited developer resources for mobile is to identify areas of the existing browser app that need improvement. The “startup costs” of developing a true mobile app seem to high.
MedMaster Mobility’s approach may be an exception to this because of their integrated speech recognition, and they are focusing their resources specifically on mobile. However, I’m also pretty sure they aren’t going to open source their actual iOS application.
Actually, even if it is a simple mobile app that can just register appointments with duplication check, that is going to be of great use to physicians. In fact there is no need of full mobile version as such, but more so for tablets/laptops as these are common devices for computing today. But a mobile app for appointments/calender will enable physicians a better reach and simple access to very preliminary task. I feel our developers should give a thought to this seriously. I am sure that adding this simple app will make OpenEMR one of the topmost EHRs in terms of demand.
