Justify question

In the openemr forum, I did n’t get responses to my justify search.  So I am asking.

How does the justify work?  For a CPT code,  does it provide the associated ICD codes?  Who made those associatations?  Does it just matches the strings in the description fields?

You’ll notice that the “billing” table has a “justify” column.  When you select a procedure code and one or more diagnosis codes and click Justify, the diagnosis codes are put there for the row of the corresponding procedure code.

This is all for billing purposes, of course; your claims will be rejected if you don’t specify a diagnosis for each charge.

My followup question is:  it doesn’t necessary cross check the CPT and ICD codes.  I put a CPT code for chestpain and entered a ICD for the removal of arm,  and clicked justify,  it took the pair and didn’t complain.  I checked the billing screen and the pair got entered in the claim also.

Can someone give me a use case with real codes to test the justify feature? Thanks.

OpenEMR has no logic to intelligently match diagnoses with procedures.  It would be nice to have a feature like that, but I don’t know where you’d find lists of the allowed combinations.

I was told by a physician that there are software packages the provide matching/justification, but I haven’t checked myself.
