Initial Questions about getting started with OpenEMR

I am a solo Anatomic pathologist and need new BILLING software only for ICD-10 compliance. Will OpenEMR do this? What windows version doe I need and what hardware requirements are ideal. This would be used on 1 computer only without needing a server and networking only for printing.

Thanks,

Bill Blank

I have OpenEMR running on windows 2008 server, windows 7 pro, windows 7 home, windows 8.0, windows 8.1, windows 2012 server. So any version of windows should do, I have not tried it on win 10 yet. Hardware a good healthy pc 64 bit with 4 to 8 gig of ram and most any hard drive 250 gig and up should fit the bill.

Don’t need nearly as much hardware if you run Linux for the same or faster system.

The 4.2.0 XAMPP OpenEMR Package will work with Windows 7 & 8, not 10. Would not recommend installing components separately because it’s too difficult for neophytes.

Our Ophthalmology practice uses the Windows package on a 64 bit laptop with 4GB of RAM & 250 GB hard drive. Fairly easy/inexpensive to add RAM & hard drive capacity in a desktop or laptop.

We have a very slow Internet connection, about half of mbps; but no problem sending e-claims to clearinghouses.

If you are comfortable working in Windows, best to stick with it. Steep learning curve with Linux. There is a learning curve with OpenEMR but nowhere as steep as with Linux.

Perfectly fine to use OpenEMR just for billing. Have a look at the Wiki & Users Guide. If there are unanswered questions about billing, post them in the Help Forum.
