Import 2014 ICD-10 PCS File?

bgregg wrote on Tuesday, November 19, 2013:

Has anyone been able to load the 2014 ICD-10 PCS file from CMS’ website? I am getting the error of “UNSUPPORTED database load file:
2014-ICD10-Code-Descriptions.zip”

If so, care to share the fix?

Dear Stephen,

Do you know if this has been included in any of the recent patches of 4.1.2 or there is a plan to do this?

Hi,

It hasn’t been included in a 4.1.2 patch. The patches can’t remove files(need to remove the older icd10 files from contrib/icd10 for it too work), so is tough to support in that way.

In order to use the newer files, regardless of whether the old ones are deleted, MD5 hashes need to be generated and inserted into supported_external_loads as Stephen did in the above commit.

So if you are running 4.1.2, the SQL upgrade script in Stephen’s commit actually makes only the required inserts and could be used safely, and you could also pull the data files directly out of github.

As Brady mentioned, a robust patching mechanism suitable for general consumption is technically challenging, but it’s possible to upgrade one’s own system if you are comfortable pulling data directly from git and applying it manually.
