Hylafax & Fax Modem Advice

Hi guys, I’ve been trying to get hylafax set up with openemr for a while now with no avail (more so on the getting hylafax to work). I think that my problem was more with the modem side because I was trying to get Asterisk and t38modem to work properly on my Ubuntu machine. I’ve since given up and decided that it might be easier just to buy a fax modem for our setup, but I was wondering what some of you guys out there are using as your modem and how your hylafax servers are set up so I can get an idea of what works and what doesn’t. I’d be great if anyone could give me any recommendations on modems or even possible alternatives to hylafax. Thanks!

Hi
For starters I assume you are using some linux distro, correct?  You may  want to checkout the hylafax hardware list here http://www.hylafax.org/content/Documentation.
For the most part you should use external Fax Modems.  If you are using an internal (PCI) modem, many of them are driver dependent as they have no on-board processor.  These are generally what is known as a win-modem.

Thanks

We are using the Multimodem ZPX fax board .  Hylafax recognizes it right away.  I am very pleased with the Multimodem ZPX.

We are also using AvantFax (www.Avantfax.com) front end instead of OpenEMR.  There are many more fax features in AvantFax that we like over OpenEMR faxing.  Plus we get a lot of non relevant EMR faxes that we don’t want to store in OpenEMR.  We have been extremely pleased with AvantFax.  Our Linux distro is SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10.

I hope to start experimenting with a software modem (http://iaxmodem.sourceforge.net/howto.php)  soon so that I can eliminate the need for a hardware modem.   Eventually I would like to run OpenEMR and AvantFax on a Mac Mini server but the hardware modem is the obstacle right now.

I have had consistent success using the USB version of the Actiontec External USB/Serial 56K Modem (EX560LKU) with hylafax, one at home and two at the office server. You may need to find a used or refurbished model (cheap).
