Help with Very Basic OpenEMR set up

Situation
I am a retired Physician and have a very small concierge practice in a home office. I want to set up OpenEMR on a laptop just to keep medical records for these patients. (Not cloud based.) I would also like to electronic prescribe scripts, receive lab results / faxes, and print notes. I would like to do this on free basis since monthly charges can’t be justified with very small patient load.

I am not a huge EMR Tech, but I can work a PC pretty well. I tried several years ago to set up OpenEMR and ran into problems and deleted it all.
Is there a very simple installation process I can use for this sort of thing?

Browser:
Chrome or MS Edge

Operating System
MS Win 11 home.

Thanks in advance for any assistance!

Dave

Hi Dave,
Yes! You can set up OpenEMR on your Windows 11 Home laptop with a simple installation process. Since you want offline use, electronic prescriptions, lab results, and printing notes, you’ll need the XAMPP-based OpenEMR package for an easy setup.

:small_blue_diamond: Step-by-Step OpenEMR Installation (Windows 11)

:one: Download OpenEMR

  • Go to the OpenEMR website: https://www.open-emr.org/
  • Click on Download, then choose Windows (XAMPP Package).
  • Download the latest stable version.

:two: Install XAMPP & OpenEMR

  • Run the .exe installer you downloaded.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Once installed, launch XAMPP Control Panel and start Apache & MySQL.

:three: Open OpenEMR

  • Open Chrome or Edge and enter:

CopyEdit

http://localhost/openemr
  • Log in with default credentials (provided in installation).

:four: Configure Electronic Prescriptions

  • OpenEMR supports NewCrop eRx for electronic prescriptions, but it requires paid integration.
  • Alternative: Use Free E-Prescribing websites (like GoodRx, RxNT Free Plan) alongside OpenEMR.

:five: Set Up Lab Results & Faxing

  • Most labs require HL7 interfaces, which need third-party services.
  • Workaround: Manually enter lab results into OpenEMR’s patient records.

:six: Enable PDF Note Printing

  • OpenEMR allows you to print patient notes as PDFs.
  • Go to Patient Chart → Reports → Print Summary → Save as PDF. If you not comfortable with this, we are providing OpenEMR setup services. Book your free consultaion

Thanks!

Unfortunately, GoodRx, RxNT aren’t free e-prescribing websites.

I spoke with both:

GoodRx says they have not e-prescribing in their system.
RxNT does not have a free plan.

Does anyone know of a free web based or app based program to e-prescribe?

Thanks!

@DJM I hope you’re doing well. Unfortunately, I don’t know of any free web-based options, but one that has been tested with OpenEMR is WenoExchange. It’s easily integratable and works well. I belive you can get a free trial by contacting them https://wenoexchange.com/sign-in/

Thank you for the information.
