Situation: tried to follow all the instructions on upgrading from 8.3.0 to 8.4.0 , i created a directory named it openemer_bk under which i put the old directory openemr, then i wget the new version , then tar -pxvzf openemr-8.4.0.tar.gz then changed its name to openemr , copied openemr_bk/openemr/sites/ to openemr/sites/, but when https://localhost/openemr/sql_upgrade.php , i get an error , i put everything back together the way it was before so i am back to 8.3.0 until i find out what I am missing.
