Enable Scanner Support - Scanning documents

I’m having trouble finding what the Enable Scanner Support setting in admin configuration does.  Any ideas?  I am hoping it allows a direct scan button for documents.

EX. I would like to press a scan button under the insurance or ID documents area rather then pushing the upload button and navigating to the pre-scanned file.  In other words a scan button would start the scanner the document and drop it in the insurance or ID category.

Another idea would be to push the scanner button on the scanner attached to the work station and the item scanned would automatically be uploaded to the document category that is active on the workstation screen.

Most scanners can be setup to automatically create PDF’s when you scan a document so this issue should be possible some how.

This will save my clinic a lot of time for inputting documents and ID’s.

Scanner support in OpenEMR means you have tools to view the list of scanned documents and dispatch them (selecting individual pages if desired) to patients.  PHP doesn’t offer a way to control scanners, but perhaps a solution including a browser plug-in on the client side could be developed to do what you want.

If you arrange network access to the scan location from the PC with scanner attached & properly program the scanner software to dump the data there, you can accomplish what you’re trying to do in just a few clicks.
Note that the current Scan/Fax dispatch code only works with tiff files, although PDF would be a much better option.
