Guys,

How is OpenEMR prepared for EHR? We need a middleware component to communicate MySQL database with other databases which might become a standard in EHR world? I look forward to your comments. I’m working on the committee where people are trying to come up with a standard where EMR can communicate in a common language. My thought always is XML data format in which the data can be uploaded to a centralized database in which other health providers access. If this OpenEMR come up with one component, I think that OpenEMR will be a very vital organization.  Any comments are appreciated.

VN,

Right now, in Connecticut, there is a movement for a Health Information Exchange, HIE. It cuts right to the root of your question; how will data be exchanged between disparate systems.

So far, in my research, I’ve found that HL7 is the standard for the data exchange in the USA:

I encourage everyone to learn more:

As long as OpenEMR can communicate using such a standard I think it’s well positioned to be a strong alternative to commercial EMR/EHR products.

Thanks for ideas. Now this is a dilemma. for instance, a provider already has EMR and ready to exchange his/her data with common standard which will be enforced by EHR community. the cost of setup and on-going support for his and hers is about $10,000 per yr. On the other hand, some physicians never have EMR, but EHR standard might have a light EMR built within EHR as a whole, and the cost of using this light EMR is very minimal, such as $50 for month for this service. Why the physician who already has EMR is more benefitial than the ones without it in term of cost.

I’m working for a company which eventually will set the standard for EHR, and this is exact scenario which we preliminary discussed about.

I really like the OpenEMR and don’t want this OpenEMR losing sight of this new coming which potentially cause OpenEMR obsolete. As matter of fact, I like to get into this business of setting up and development and support OpenEMR.

Also, does anyone know the percentage of providers using this OpenEMR?

Thanks for inputs and opinions.
