Dragon - Dictation setup

Hello!

Has anyone setup dictation on the system using Dragon software?
Can the dictation software “type” directly in the OpenEMR note area?

Thanks!

Sherwin

Yes, you can talk & let Dragon insert your translated speech directly into the text input boxes in OpenEMR.
You can also speak into Word/OpenOffice/Acrobat, save the file & upload into the patient’s record.
This is also possible with the voice recognition that is onboard in Windows Vista/7, however it has trouble with most medical terminology unless you spend large amounts of time training the speech detection.

If you have more than a couple of folks on your team that are going to use it, Dragon 10 Medical might be well worth it to you.  Do NOT however spend the extra cash on some idiot to come out for “training” and don’t try to use the speech dictation microphones that are designed to look like the dictaphones you might be used to.  They are pieces of poo, and they screw up after only a few weeks of use.  Just use an inexpensive moderate quality WIRED headset or microphone and use the keyboard hot keys.  Read the documentation to set it up the way you like it and make user profiles.  You will want to move your profiles from computer to computer over time, and you need to learn that yourself.  No time like the present.

P.S.>  It might be worth noting that you can use an audio or digital recorder to take notes while doing rounds or the like, and then you can dump the recording into dragon for speech recognition.  You can then manually correct any bo-bo’s in it.  You can do this in the office as well, and be able to take notes without sticking your face in the computer.

aethelwulffe is 100% correct
Let me add that I’ve had pretty good luck with Dragon & other speech detection software using both good quality USB headsets, and the higher end Bluetooth headsets if you have a computer that is Bluetooth capable.

I have a Windows R2 2008 server but have been advised to go with Ubuntu for openemr because Apache rewrite was the only HIPPA compliant module.  A key feature for me will be using Dragon or other speech recognition program.  Can Dragon 10.0 preferred edition run on Ubuntu server 11.10?
Thanks, John

You will be running Dragon on a Windows workstation, not on the server.  It shouldn’t matter what the server is, only what you use on the workstation.  I found that Internet Explorer allows full functionality of Dragon on a workstation.
