I just upgraded from v 6.1 to 7.0.0. To update to v 7.0.1 do i just upgrade or do i have to patch first.
if you have data in your database of your clinic, then take a back up first of the mysql, then copy the upgrade files as per instructions and run the upgrade file.
i did it many times, its pretty neat and easy. in the blink of an eye it gets done.

I did it before as well and its easy as you pointed out. I was more concerned regarding updating versions without patching. As MySQL is very finnicky and i won’t be able to repair damages on working database except of course recovering from a backup 
Anyway i did the safe bet and opted for patching first (twice) and then upgraded and patched again

yes the best way to go 
i usually do tests on local server, then on my test openemr on website n if no errors then the main site.
