In addition to OpenEMR, we also work with the Veterans Administration’s VistA EHR package quite extensively. One of the things people like about VistA is how seamlessly it integrates clinical reminders.
Does OpenEMR have any plans to support this in the future? If so, what is the current state of development?
This has been a request from my beta testers as well. Do you have a suggestion for how the reminders would appear?
* pop up when user logs in
* email reminder
* when a patient, with an attached reminder, is opened by a specific user or any user
There are likely to be different types of reminders: office-wide, provider specific, patient specific, patient-provider specific.
You’re right, I can see the need for different types of reminders. I think it should be intuitive: office-wide reminders should pop up on log in, patient specific should be when you start an encounter with a patient and, if not addressed, again before you end the encounter, provider specific upon provider log in. Best to keep things simple.
I think a good example of how reminders are implemented is the VistA EHR package from the VA. They don’t use pop ups but it’s a well designed system that presents reminders is a clear, easy to find and navigate way.
