Biometric Sign-In?

I would love to see a biometric sign-in option incorporated into OpenEMR. Perhaps the ability to utilize a USB fingerprint scanner. Is that type of solution feasible? If so, I’d love to talk specifics and perhaps set up a sponsorship.

Just to clarify, this would be to replace sign-in sheets during the patient check-in process. Not user login.

Biometric is deceptively simple term. We have used fingerprint scanners on laptops for years to control access to laptops and then used the password manager application that controls log in to browser sites. This approach does not need EMR changes since most such applications support filling user & password in a browser page.

Then there are facial recognition and other exotic techniques. PC can be locked/unlocked when an authorized face is out of or in view. But everyone found the concept of leaving an active camera in the exam room to be creepy and potentially risky.

Do you have a specific scenario and related technology in mind?

That makes sense. We had explored this option in the past however like various other device interfaces, the need for developing device specific solution was too much.

Also it was thought for our practices useful to keep this one physical record of patient visit in this paperless world if there were ever any doubts.

Thanks for the reply. Maybe I’m getting too futuristic with ideas of biometric scanning. Would be a very neat solution though. Essentially, I’d like to do away with hard copy sign-in sheets and have the process handled electronically. Maybe a simpler solution would be to assign a 4 digit pin to each patient which could be entered on a USB numeric pad upon arrival…?

This link will give you some ideas…

Hi, rethinkink this old post… because COVID19 will be a good idea to have FACE RECOGNITION to register patients…

That means, when patient arrives to facility, goes to the Face Recognition to arrive registering… then, in OpenEmr “patient status” changes to “Arrived”… then at end of session, patient will recognized again for end of session or end of therapy or end of visit. There is no need for physical sign on paper for Insurance billing.

Is this possible ? or there is any work around ?

Thank you
