Another interfacing question: existing engine integration...do I need mirth?

I have openEMR running, and have successfully generated an HL7 MSH segment, by hitting ‘Save and transmit’ and having notepad pop up the message.
Forgive the crudeness of this question, but can I get that HL7 message into our engine(existing & running vended product), withotu an intermediary?
or, do I need Mirth to go between somehow?

Depends on what you are sending. HL7 layouts are not stored in this package - scripts generate what they need. Check lab order interface which sends orders using sftp. But mirth works well if you need flexibility, store and forward as well as auditing. Also HL7v3 could become issue in current mode.
