What is the insurance numbers under practice settings used for

I have been working on the insurance information and saw this selection for insurance numbers and just wandered if anyone knew what it was used for.

In the old days insurers would assign a ID number for us to use on claims.

Then it became our EIN, now it’s our NPI.

For Workers Compensation we still have to use their assigned number to submit claims.
