i’m wondering
why did i fuss with installing the VM version on top of Mandriva 2007? would i not be b etter off installing it virgin in Mandriva and not bothering with the VM if the machine just sits there as a web server? it runs slow, cant log in from outside, etc…
what do you think?
can i transfer over my database and user id’s that i set up already?
Yep, there were two objectives to this project. One was to provide a quick way to evaluate the software(the VM can be run on any OS that supports the VM Player, which includes windows and linux). The other was to give detailed instructions on installing all the software components needed to install OpenEMR(this is why i documented building the VM).
There are definitely two options here. One is customizing the VM for your purposes, and the other is installing openemr on a native server.
The thing cool about the VM is that it allows you(using the free "VMware Server" software) to easily move, back up(cloning), and make snapshots(very helpful when customizing your VM, so you can play around with it without worrying about breaking it). However, you will definitely lose out on performance.
So if you want to be able to customize/test safely and easily move it to to other servers then the VM is great.
If you have gotten to the point where your gonna use one server and finished most of the testing/customization, then it does make sense to install it on its own server. If your gonna use mandriva then just follow the installation instructions of the appliance manual at http://bradymd.com/appliance (minus, the initial VMWARE part of course). It’s also straightforward to transfer the databases(mysql and postgresql) to your new installation.
I’m still perplexed about why you can’t log in from the internet. Since you can log in from other computers on your local network, I really doubt this is a VM issue.

Also, there’s no need to post both here and at oemr.org. I posted the same reponse there.
