Tried OpenEMR? University needs to interviewU

apotroph wrote on Monday, January 23, 2006:

Hi all. I’m a graduate student at Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU). Anybody that has experience with trying to implement openEMR (successfully OR otherwise) is badly needed for interviewing via email, and remaining a contact for about 1.5 months to answer an occasional question as we build a case study surrounding the implementation effort.

I can take an email interview too,

Hi Donald, I’m a consultant who has done various OpenEMR installations.  I suggest you post any questions here that may be of general interest, and also feel free to email me privately with any other inquiries.

Thanks for quick replies.

The actual "project" should involve a specific (single) case (OpenEMR implementation) study. Therefore a single person (or multiple people surrounding a single implementation) is sought as a volunteer(s).

Rod - if you think you fit the bill, then great! You’ll be appreciated for sure. Regardless, the actual time involved should be minimal - essentially you would point us to where we can find info on the case itself, as well as answer very specific questions as they come.

What you get in return is a very serious unbiased report in Biomedical Informatics regarding your implementations. The authors are proffesionals that already have their initial degrees in medicine or IT.

- I think I talk to much -

OK, it sounds like you wish to study a single implementation that has already been done, as opposed to doing a new one.

Why don’t you tell us what you think makes an ‘interesting’ implementation for the purposes of your project (consider for example how long the site should be using OpenEMR), and I’ll consult with the other developers here to figure out which installation might be a good fit and willing to participate.

Excellent. Thanks,

I have been using OpenEMR exclusively for my medical records for 2 years.

I do not use all aspects of the OpenEMR system our office is now essentially "paperless" from the medical record aspect.

I will also be willing if desired.

Rod,

Thank-you very much in advance for your help.

Their are five members on our project’s team thus far. Our professor, Dr. Joan Ash, may use our real-world case analysis (of a specific openEMR implementation) in a subsequent, 3rd edition (cross our fingers).

Please identify an implementation (our “case”) with contacts that are able to answer questions regarding it’s implementation (including any subsequent “testing”). As per your request, please refer to the following criteria/guidelines; we certainly cannot expect them all to be met; we just need your “best match:”

1. Inclusion of "Personal Health Record" (patient-accessible/oriented medical records) functionality. Special mention to the user-interface with regards to a non-techie, if at all possible. Regardless, EMR functionality is our primary goal.

2. Allows evaluation of open source EMR solutions relative to proprietary.

3. Ability to study the data storage and transmission protocols.

4. A large a networking environment (as many nodes, terminals, and users, as possible).

5. One in which the efficasy with respect to the involved organizations can be addressed (such as: health care practice; developers; and users).

Thanks,

Don

P.S. Do you think we should open a new thread, or email?

apotroph wrote on Wednesday, January 25, 2006:

What I meant by #5 was:

5. One in which the efficasy of OpenEMR as a solution, from the differing perspectives of the different organizations involved (such as: health care practice; developers; and users).

OK I talked with some of the developers and it looks like Sam Bowen’s practice may be your best bet.  So why don’t you continue with him privately (drbowen at users.sourceforge.net).  If for any reason that doesn’t look like a good fit, Sam can point you to some other possibilities.

I think you should also address questions to Rod if it’s regarding a installation/development/deployment issue.
