Technical Writer Opportunities

cc: @robert.down (I know you’re always looking to improve the Wiki  ). Feel free to chime in.

I lied. I have 5 things :).

There is a lot of documentation in openemr/Documentation at master · openemr/openemr · GitHub that I feel would be better suited for the Wiki with better descriptions and visual help along the way.

BTW, please request a wiki account here: http://www.open-emr.org/wiki/index.php/Special:RequestAccount

Thanks Matthew- I have some questions which may have obvious answers:

In what form do you want the final deliverable (documentation)?
Is there a link to download Chart Tracker? Basic Billing?
Do you have Ray’s contact info?
Do I need special access to get into these areas?
You want me to list the features that don’t have wikis?

In what form do you want the final deliverable (documentation)?

Have you ever edited Wikipedia? If so, there is a “sandbox” to carry out experiments. Once happy, you can update a given page with the markup. If you’re not familiar, please study MediaWiki. The reason I mention Wikipedia is because OpenEMR’s wiki uses the “engine” that Wikipedia uses. It’s freely available and sort of user friendly.

Is there a link to download Chart Tracker? Basic Billing?

It’s all in the software. The easiest path to installing the software is on your own Windows computer via http://open-emr.org/wiki/index.php/OpenEMR_5.0.0_XAMPP_Package_Installation - let me know if you need help. Once you have it running, I can get on a Google Hangouts call with you to explain everything!

Do you have Ray’s contact info?

Yes. I can email it to you.

Do I need special access to get into these areas?

Yup. But it’s easy. Just request an account here: http://www.open-emr.org/wiki/index.php/Special:RequestAccount

You want me to list the features that don’t have wikis?

Not quite. I’m pointing out that there are features that don’t have wiki entries. Ideally, they should have full documentation coverage. This is a long term goal, of course. The very first thing for you to work on once you’re set up is the Chart Tracker. That should be a great introduction to everything.

Ok, thanks. I requested an account but got an error message.

Okay, please give me some time to work with our resident wizard on this…

We’re aware of the issue with the user accounts.

Now would be a great time to throw up a giant stop sign - don’t bother learning Mediawiki; learn Markdown - it’s much easier and where I want to move our documentation to. We can automatically transform Markdown to Mediawiki automatically.

@cgiraud Okay, I just private messaged you the username/password. Please change the password of course.

Works for me!

Didn’t work for me. I’ll get to this tomorrow! Right now I’m on the clock with another job. Thanks for this learning opportunity. Do you have deadlines?

Christine

@cgiraud Sounds good! No deadlines.

Hi Matthew- I keep getting the error message when I request an account. Same message as above.

Hi @cgiraud ,
We manually created an account for you on the wiki. Send me an email at brady.g.miller@gmail.com if you haven’t received the login credentials yet.
thanks!

Hi @cgiraud, any luck?

Hi Matt- Sorry for the delay in responding. I think I’m going to pass on
entering the tech writer field.

Best of luck!

cg

Good luck with everything, @cgiraud

As OpenEMR looks to apply to Season of Docs decided to revive this thread to see if there’s anyone who could help out the project? We’re looking to build on our momentum from our organization’s participation with the Summer of Code :rocket:

I would be interested in helping, if the GSOD project comes up with a plan that I have any relevant skills for. I’m v familiar with the original docs wiki, but I’m not a formally trained tech writer, just took a few classes and have a lot of opinions on doc design

first the bad news

Thank you for your interest and enthusiasm for Season of Docs.
We’re sorry to say that your organization’s application for Season of Docs was not successful this year. There were many high quality applications, so the final selection of organizations was not easy.
Please do stay in touch with the progress of Season of Docs, and let us know if you have any questions or feedback by emailing season-of-docs-support@googlegroups.com. We encourage you to apply again next year.
Sincerely,
The Google Season of Docs team

good news: encouraged by the nice responses here and elsewhere on other forum posts for the willingness of the community to take on the challenge of creating and updating the documentation :weight_lifting_woman:
