Proposed New Logo Concepts

robertdown wrote on Thursday, September 05, 2013:

Hello all,

Our logo desperately needs updating. I contacted a friend who owns a graphic design company and he’s offered to design a new logo for us pro bono.

Here are the 3 he has suggested (Personally, I like Logo 3 the best)

Logo 1: https://www.dropbox.com/s/avp53u8wvcwr8bj/Logo%201.png
Logo 2: removed
Logo 3: https://www.dropbox.com/s/uox0gkswtk7s0sp/Logo%203.png

I like the rhythm but what is the origin? EKC, or Rapid eye movements, or just any oscilloscope movement?

Where is the Logo to be placed? I love the Moon/Sun behind the cloud Banner…even if it is so old… If I have to make a choice from these three I would like #3 with an healthy Electrocardiogram rhythm.

robertdown wrote on Thursday, September 05, 2013:

The rhythm is based on an EKG, but it is obviously not an exact EKG match (I’d hate to be in that rhythm).

I’m sure we could get the rhythm to match a healthy EKG.

Hi Folks-
Just a comment from an interested outsider: I like #3 the best also but I wonder if it’d be a good idea to change the “O” to a red circle with white interior, and a red cross inside. The healthcare symbol is a Red Cross, after all, rather than a white one- that’s the Swiss logo, isn’t it?

fsgl wrote on Thursday, September 05, 2013:

The images avoid the Caduceus versus Rod of Asclepius controversy.

The white cross in the “O” is reminiscent of a First Aid Station.

Physicians tend to be a conservative, stodgy bunch. Avant garde designs might take some getting to. Perhaps something more classical?

robertdown wrote on Thursday, September 05, 2013:

I actually think these logos are pretty conservative. The O was designed that way intentionally, so that it can stand as the apps square logo (for use in places such as Facebook, Twitter, Gravatar, even here on Sourceforge.

While the Swiss flag is indeed a white cross on a red background, these logos are a very different shade of red than what the Swiss corporate design guide outlines. Also, the Swiss flag is either a 1:1 square, or a 2:3 rectangle, not an O.

Thank you, I stand re-educated.

During the process I had to learn a bit about the Swiss flag as well. A random fact I learned - Switzerland and Vatican City are the only sovereign states that have a 1:1 flag.

I read the Aesqulapius Rod story and it seems a good reason to change the Caduceus into the Aesculapius Rod.

Next question, what to do for others who also make professional use op OpenEMR and who are no Doctors?

I would love to see the IT part (Computer Internet or electrons going up and down the motherboards/Internet, the Medical part and the professionalism of all medical people using OpenEMR, including the International object of the program) … and as long as it is for free… how long will this professional accept all our input to make something that is to every body’s liking.

Is the Logo Developer THE PROFESSIONAL we are looking for and can any Developer combine all different opinions… on the fly…

The dashes are to give you time to think. I love to read the different opinions to come to an understandable accepted LOGO.

(Rod Roark,… Aesculapius Rod, What else to say?)

Red is a hot color; conveying danger, warning, provocation (stop signs, traffic lights, waving red before the animal in a bullring, despite the fact that red is not perceived by the intended).

Blue is a cool color; calming, reassuring, serene.

Like to think that the practice of Medicine is a healing art, never intentionally jarring and upsetting.

blankev wrote on Friday, September 06, 2013:

Tnx for the input. Always great to hear from the wise, and that makes the OpenEMR Banner so great.

But as practitioners we should have something that gives us a little of both! Serene tranquility to have time as a helper in Cure, but ready to go for the Action if needed in emergencies.

Here’s some reference, it’s what the login screen could look like

https://www.dropbox.com/s/y1zbml51jzszoe8/login_screen.jpg

Note the favicon. That’s why I really love the O - it really looks good alone

blankev wrote on Saturday, September 07, 2013:

Robert,

a bit stealing from yourdesign and some stealing of the Internet made this Inlog screen.

Something with the most important parts of OpenEMR (In my view)

GNU, Inernet, Aesculapius, Global International, and your ECG idea, but I prefer that as a background with the size of “pen EMR”, but could not accomplish this feat.

Please feel free to reject or redesign, forgive me for not being more original.

I like #1. I wonder, though, if the cross could be a problem for users in muslim areas of the world.

robertdown wrote on Saturday, September 07, 2013:

Thanks for the input Peter.

I personally feel that there is too much going on in that logo. I think we should not (perhaps cannot) use the GNU logo inside our own logo. I’m a minimalist, I love logo 3 because it’s so simple.

I also like the current Aesculapius on the login page, I didn’t actually change that image, just copied it from our current login page.

robertdown wrote on Saturday, September 07, 2013:

With the exception of the inverted color scheme, this type of cross is an international standard for humanitarian and medical aid (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emblems_of_the_International_Red_Cross_and_Red_Crescent_Movement#Red_Cross).

Interesting thought, I think it’d be ok, but I’m in the US…

fsgl wrote on Saturday, September 07, 2013:

As noted in the Wikipedia article, it is the Red Crescent in Islamic countries. The cross carries very bitter symbolism for Muslims.

When you have time, read the history of the Crusades, whose participants wore the symbol of the cross on their chests. Of particular note is the Siege of Jerusalem wherein the Crusaders, covered in blood up to their knees, proceeded to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and gave thanks.

Bear in mind that only 25% of the downloads are from the U.S.

fsgl wrote on Saturday, September 07, 2013:

So we are keeping the Caduceus (2 serpents), symbol of commerce?

The present banner has a wonderful symbolism, evoking Genesis 1:3 and 1:4, revered by the faithful of the three great monotheistic religions. Light out of darkness, order out of chaos, knowledge over ignorance. Open source over proprietary (just kidding).

Even “pagans” from the Greek and Roman classical periods would not object as evidenced by Apollonian rites.

Apollo is the father of Asclepius.

robertdown wrote on Saturday, September 07, 2013:

I think we should be using the rod of Asclepius, but I have a feeling that’s a conversation for another thread.
