Openemr@openemr:~$

Hello again,
I installed the Oracle Virtual Box and OpenEMR appliance which went smoothly.  When I click on Start on my EMR virtual machine, I get the standard GRUB bootup screen.  I then log in and then receive this as the last entry.
openemr@openemr:~$
Is that all I’m supposed to see?  I thought it would take me to a user interface of the Ubuntu desktop.
Maybe not ….
I can get into the OpenEMR and the webmin site without any problems, so that is not an issue.
Is this correct?  Is this all I will see with the virtual appliance?  Not the Ubuntu desktop?
Oh, and can you tell?  I’m not really a Linux user although I do like the system just fine, I just haven’t had the time to really look at it.
Thank you again.

Yup, that’s all you should see.
The virtual appliance is a “minimal” server install.  You don’t need the ubuntu desktop environment so it’s not included to save space.  You don’t even have to login to use OpenEMR.  You’ might need to use the command line interface (from logging in) to view the error.log, patch your system or make other tweaks in the future, but if everything seems to be working from the browser side of thing, you’re in business.

Thanks Kevin …. I wasn’t sure if there was anything I was missing.  First time I have used virtual machines so I thought I was supposed to see an interface.

Hi,

If possible, I’d recommend learning how to use the OpenEMR Appliance via webmin and command line when needed. However, if you wish, you can add a desktop to it (one of the many beauties of linux is flexibility), which is described here in the OpenEMR Appliance manual:
http://www.bradymd.com/appliance/manual8/#__RefHeading__5638_695817034
(if the link doesn’t point you to the correct section of the manual, then search the page for ‘Desktop Installation’ or look at Table of Contents at ‘Configuration of the OpenEMR Appliance’->‘Desktop Installation’)
-please disregard the ‘wimps’ comment in the manual, not sure why I thought it was funny at the time of writing it
