Newbie Billing question

chapman_m wrote on Wednesday, November 30, 2005:

Hi-

I haven’t installed the billing module yet and am wanting to know if I *HAVE* to have CPT codes in order to just provide a demo of the billing features. Is this possible?

Thanks,

Mike C.

FreeB will not generate claims without CPT codes.  However you can put in some dummy codes for demo purposes.

…hmmm, the CPT codes are not provided with the installations because of AMA licensing issues.

You can install the billing but the billing will be sort of incomplete without the procedure codes.

If you already have another system with cpt codes licenses, then you can massively import them. Or enter the cpt codes you use the most by hand in the superbill menu.

How do I import the CPT codes? From where, and what format are they in?

Thank you,

Mike C.

Select Patient
Create or choose an existing Encounter
Select Superbill on bottom left
Next to the word superbill is a word in () most likely it says (more). Click on this and you can create and edit all your codes.

I believe this works for both authorized and non authorized users.

For a massive import, you have to have the codes before hand, from another already licensed software, or purchase them to the AMA.

The table codes in the database is self explanatory about the format.

OK…thanks for the info and the help. Now if I can only get the printer to work. I am going to take a break from it and take another look at it tonight.

install cups [cups.org]
get the right ppd driver from your printer from cups.org, put it in /usr/share/ppd

run

/usr/sbin/lpadmin -p [name] -E -v [device-location] -m [thedriver.ppd]

if parallel port, then location is: parallel:/dev/lp0

if ip printer then: socket://ipaddress

[name] is where you will be sending stuff to print.

There are a couple of Perl scripts for importing CPT codes, and some important related info is in the code as comments.  See:

contrib/util/load_cpt_desc.plx
contrib/util/load_doc_fees.plx

Also note the other utilities for loading ICD9 and HCPCS codes.
