MVC design architecture for openEMR

Hello all,
I’m thinking of redesigning the core code structure of openEMR from procedural code to more sophisticated OOP design and MVC pattern, I’m looking for some suggestions (Advantages/Disadvantages) on these changes.
I know openEMR is ONC certified application, does this certification will be affected If I change the code structure and other functionality?
