Minified JS, ShockWave Files in Codebase

Hoowdy to everyone. Big thank you to Brady for bringing out the patches in
quick succession to help those on LM17. I have yet to try it myself but
have LM17 on my list of distros to try out soon. I have been working with
Andreas in the debian-med group to try and package OpenEMR and get it
included in the offical Debian repositories. Hopefully this will provide
for easier installs/distributions of the software with packges/patches,
etc. A quick ‘apt-get update’ and you’d have the latest … we are a long
way from that.

My current question to everyone is: Below is listed the set of minified
JavaScript files and SWF that lintian (the Debian tool that checks a
package) has flagged as errors. Essentially there are a couple broad areas
that if anyone has references/suggestions of where we got the code I can go
looking for it and either bring in the source to our repository or add it
to the package for Debian to satisfy their requirement that all source is
included.

  1. custom_template ckeditor. I believe that we use this editor in certain
places of OpenEMR … can someone confirm that?
  2. dynarch_calendar.js -> is this used by the Smarty calendar stuff?
  3. jsquery - Do we really rely on 1.2.1 through 1.9.1? I think that most
of the Debian distros have jsquery packaged for them … I will be trying
to replace ours with the distributed version. Can someone point me to a
file or two that relies on the JSQuery function so that I can test it once
I migrate to the offically supported Debian version?
  4. knockout <-- never seen this one mentioned in emails but maybe will need
    to confirm it’s not needed.
  5. openflashcart <-- This one I have seen mentioned but if it’s available
via a package will try to use that.
  6. phpmyadmin <-- We should just remove this entirely for the Debian pkg
b/c it’s available via all the repositories and installs easily.

==> These are stragglers as well … anyone know where the SWF came from?
I think I have seen the fancybox stuff used in the code base (or at least
in the email).

Hi Ian,

Regarding minified js scripts, how does debian know if they are minified. I think minified just means that all comments are removed and they take up one long line. For example, jquery can be downloaded in minified form (filename includes a min ni it) or as standard. Can we fix these issues by instead using the standard (ie. not minified) files; seems like a lot of the js files below are not even “minified”.

Off the top of my head:

  1. custom_template ckeditor. I believe that we use this editor in certain
places of OpenEMR … can someone confirm that?
----I think used in Nation Notes

  2. dynarch_calendar.js -> is this used by the Smarty calendar stuff?
----Used throughout OpenEMR for input of dates
(this has been modified to support centralized internationalization in OpenEMR)

  3. jquery - Do we really rely on 1.2.1 through 1.9.1? I think that most

And developers can’t stick with an old version, since many times the features they want require a newer version. Thus, the codebase has scripts that use a variety of jquery versions.

Brady - Thanks for the replies/information. I am not 100% clear how
lintian figures out something is minifed vs just that the source is
missing. Most likely if the code is all on one line, no comments, etc.

I can start finding the source for the little libraries that we are using
and start adding them in. I was just wondering if anything can really be
pruned.

I was afraid that jsquery might have that nasty habit of not being backward
compatible and that’s why we had a myriad of version in the code base. I
will try to start working out what files rely on which version and then
report back.

Agree that removing phpmyadmin is a pain for DIY’s since it’s nice to have
all the tools in one little package that is installed. For the Debian
stuff we can add “Suggests” to the package to alert people that we
recommend phpmyadmin - I doubt that OpenEMR really depends on it.

There’s a bit of a messier method to override it … but the security issue
might push us over the edge in just stripping it out and suggesting people
install and keep it up to date on their own.

I’ll have to setup a windows test box so that I can see how much of a pain
it is to download/install.

cheers
ian

ps - I am down to ~140 error messages from lintian and have a package now
that at least will install and run. I included the little php tricks from
phpmyadmin to automatically configure the php.ini parameters. Seems like
it might work well once completely fixed up.

I suspect that similar issues may arise with the different version of things like jQuery fancybox if a wholesale replacement of jQuery to the latest version were attempted.

I have been reading up on this a little bit on the web and came to the same
conclusion. We are so far behind (version 1.2.1 when the latest release
is 1.9.1 - packaged version with Debian is 1.7.2 I think)

I would be surprised if there weren’t problems with upgrading. I guess I
will start to look into a long term project to upgrade one set of files at
a time (we only have 4 or 5 that require 1.2.1, we have lots that depend on
1.2.2). Maybe we can bring everything up to the Debian distro version
(1.7.2) and then keep in sync as things evolve … a huge project I know
with lots of testing. I will start the work … I doubt we’ll ever
successfully be accepted in to the Debian repos unless we do this (or we
can provide all the different source files used to generate the JS files.

Hi,

Guess I am a bit confused. Can’t we just change the min js files to the standard js files for jquery?

Even if you expend a huge amount of effort to bring the codebase up to using the most up to date jquery (and the effort would likely be huge), we’d still fall into the same “trap” in a couple years(actually more like just a couple months). For example, when jquery 2.4 etc. is out and a developers needs it for a certain feature/plug-in, that developer will likely not then spend 100x the effort of the feature to then make the entire codebase compatible with it.

Because of above, I am guessing we are not the only debian package that has this same exact issue with jquery (ie. I don’t see this issue being a showstopper for a debian package since it there seems to be no “long-term” fix for the issue; I’ve come to terms (ie. acceptance) with this issue several years back by simply rationalizing that each jquery version is it’s own separate package).

I agree with you on this one. We shouldn’t force a developer who is volunteering their time to have to use the projects version of jquery.

I haven’t been trolling the lists long enough to see if this is a show stopper. I have been trying to collect the older versions of jquery an company to add to the Debian package. I guess it is more of a philosophical debate in that if someone went through the effort to package and distribute it, it’d be nice to re use it.

Would let is get any security updates/fixes automatically.

For the time being I will look for the source files for all our versions of the different parts.

I also have a few patches to submit for I related fixes to the source that were uncovered with the packaging excersize.
