Help - error message windows 8 OpenEMR installation

Attempting a new installation of OpenEMR in Windows 8

Installed XAMPP without a problem
After installingI changed the root PW to xxxx1234
XAMPP is running without a problem

Using OpenEMR 4.2.0 installation in step 3 there is a error message
I opted for the setup to create the database

Configuring OpenEMR…
Connecting to MySQL Server…
Warning: mysql_connect(): Access denied for user ‘root’@‘localhost’ (using password: NO) in C:\xampp\htdocs\openemr\library\classes\Installer.class.php on line 457
ERROR. Check your login credentials. unable to connect to database as root

How can I get over this error?
What did I do wrong?

As mentioned in this thread, did u checked whether your mysql login credentials are correct?

Thank. I think I have mysql login credentials.
What I did was to use the XAMPP Security to set a new root password
I again checked this by changing the password using the first one - it worked. Also restarted the XAMPP.

When I start the openemr setup I went for the ‘Have setup create the database’

STEP 2
MYSQL SERVER - I had to fill in two slots
Password openemr - php accesses mysql - XXXX1234
Root pass: brdg1958 (This is the pw I changed using XAMPP - but the screen says to leave it blank)

OPENEMR USER
initial user password - pass

Tried to start phpmyAdmin
Again its asking me for a UN & PW

Hope you can help me to see what I am doing wrong when XAMPP is running and after changing the root PW making it secure.
