DRG. : any of the payment categories that are used to classify patients and especially Medicare patients for the purpose of reimbursing hospitals for each case in a given category with a fixed fee regardless of the actual costs incurred —called also diagnosis related group.
DRG is assigned to each inpatient stay. The DRGs are assigned using the principal diagnosis and additional diagnoses, the principal procedure and additional procedures, sex and discharge status. Diagnoses and procedures assigned by using ICD-10-CM codes determine the DRG assignment.
