I read that you do not need internet access to use openemr- is this true if so how do you set it so internet access is not required?? Also what exactly does “opensource” mean- silly question but does this mean that the information i enter into my copy of openemr will be available for everyone to read??
If you are asking does openemr need access to sites outside your own internal network, answer is no.
The internal network will be a server running this software and optionally other computers able to access the server. This network can be completely isolated and the software will continue to run. A caveat here - Some US govt requirements for some of the practices in the US will require patients to be able to electronically access their information from this system. If that applies to your practice, the system requirements will change.
What you enter in the system using this software is yours. Opensource does not mean open data. In fact the software has built in features to restrict access to information based on defined roles.
Explanation for ‘opensource’ is bit involved. If you are going to develop new features that you plan on selling for profit, you can search for ‘GNU General Public License’.
Thanks for the qucik & helpful reply! So how do i isolate the network, the reason im asking is i run a non-profit charitable organisation & we are wanting to use this kind of software to store appointments etc. this software appeals to us as it is completly free- however we do not always have a reliable internet connection and want the data to be as secure as possible, any advice you could give would be greatly appreciated particuarly on how we get the software running without an internet connection
