You are right. Date field in patient_data is the date on which the patient record is created and we suppose, it is not referred for any of the openemr functionality.

it’s used in library/patient.inc and contains the last updated date for the record using the NOW() SQL function. Why it’s not just set to be auto update the dare in the SQL table is anybodies guess, but it’s probably a hang over from way back when …
